An evening with Myles Kennedy at the Grand Arena

Tues 6
March
2018

Myles Kennedy chose Cape Town to kick off his solo album tour Year of the Tiger, and what a special show it was. The stripped down 2-hour set featured solo material from the new album as well as acoustic reworkings of classic (and more obscure) tracks by his bands Alter Bridge and The Mayfield. There were a few other interesting covers thrown in too including Elton John’s Levon, the final encore of the night.

The crowd singing along to the oohs and aahs of Alter Bridge’s Open Your Eyes was magical, and a highlight that sticks with me, but the whole evening felt so intimate, it was as if we were all close friends just hanging out as Myles shared his laughter, stories and soul with us.

Incubus at the Green Point A Track

Wed 28
February
218

Incubus were a solid musical presence throughout my teens and it was super special to be able to watch them live this week. Their near 2 hour set included a great mix of all their hits and included many of my personal favourites such as Wish you were herePardon Me, Sick Sad Little World and, of course, Drive.

The Venue was lovely and while the support acts (BRYNN, Retro Dizzy and Southern Wild) had to contend with a lot of harsh direct sunlight they did a great job. Here are some shots from their Cape Town show on Wednesday.

Music: 2017 in review

MUSIC

Musically, 2017 was an odd one for me – I felt a big disconnect with new releases and instead immersed myself in nostalgia and the past, either via existing favourites or previously undiscovered gems. Usually I rely on my listening data from last.fm (today is my 11th last.fm anniversary) but trawling it for 2017 releases is both depressing and a bit misleading, so I’m taking some liberties with the data* this year and going by feeling.

So here’s the music I enjoyed in 2017.
