God Mother (SE) at ROAR

Sat 12
May
2018

Savage Swedes God Mother returned for another unforgettable tour in South Africa in May. Their 2016 show at Club Med was one of the most memorable from that great and short-lived venue and their recent visit to ROAR managed to build on the energy and mania even further. Singer/screamer Sebastian Campbell spent more time out in the crowd than on stage, doing crazy things like using his mic chord as a limbo line and encouraging his (actual) mother-in-law to crowdsurf. It was awesome.

On a more bitter-sweet note, it was the last show I’d personally attend at ROAR as the iconic venue announced its June closure earlier this year. I wrote some thoughts on ROAR for Texx and the City over here – in the meantime, here are some shots from God Mother’s epic show.

36 Crazyfists (USA) at Mercury

Fri 27
April
2018

Alaskan metalcore band 36 Crazyfists played a packed-out show at Mercury on Freedom Day, with support from locals Only Forever, De Wallen and Atlantic South.

I had an unexpected complication when my camera threw me a card-read error – luckily it’s fine now, and also luckily my faithful 7D came to the rescue and I was able to shoot the rest of the show. It was a sober reminder though to always have a backup plan…

Morcheeba at Kirstenbosch

Fri 6
April
2018

British downtempo legends Morcheeba performed a once-off South African show in the always beautiful Kirstenbosch gardens in Cape Town, supported by local act Valve State. It was an unexpectedly cold night (a fact even noted and mentioned by Morcheeba’s frontwoman Skye Edwards during the show) but once the massive crowd was all standing and dancing – which didn’t take long – things heated up quite nicely.

A truly lovely show both musically and visually; here are some shots from the night.
