New painting: Our Fearless Leader

ART

I’ve recently completed a new painting, a classic military-style portrait with a touch of absurdity. Photo below and more after the jump.

Vuvuvultures (UK), BEAST & The Dollfins at Mercury

Friday 14 March 2014

For those like me who missed Ramfest earlier this month (or for those who were there and wanted to catch one of the headliners again), Vuvuvultures did an SA tour playing one of the last shows on their roster at Mercury last Friday along with BEAST and The Dollfins.

I don’t often go monochrome but it was a high contrast b/w kinda night…

[Mildly NSFW due to VVV frontwoman Harmony Boucher’s transparent dress…]

Walkie Talkie triptych

April – November 2013

Just under a year ago, Jaco from Bittereinder asked me if I’d be interested in shooting him, Toast Coetzer and Hemelbesem for their new collaborative project Walkie Talkie. The trick was that all three members were scattered around the place; Jaco suggested three separate portraits stuck together, and from there the idea evolved into something a bit more conceptual.

After lots of back and forth mails about who was in town when and where we could meet to shoot, I finally took the last shot of the triptych (Hemelbesem) in early November. Phew!

It was the first time I’d actually planned an image completely before creating it, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

Sunday at the CTEMF

Sunday 9 February 2014

Last year was the first annual Cape Town Electronic Music Festival, a really cool inner-city weekend event featuring both local and international electronic artists. This time the festival moved to the Grand Parade, a really great and truly central venue, and, even though I only attended one day this time around, I think that this year’s festival was even better than last year’s.

Kingdom band launch with Stoker & Feverstone at Mercury

Saturday 8 February 2014

It’s been a while since I’ve been to a proper loud and sweaty gig – that, combined with what I’d been hearing about Kingdom had me really looking forward to their band launch at Mercury for a good while. And after the fact I can say the hype is well deserved, Kingdom put on a great show  and Stoker and Feverstone were the perfect accompaniments.
