New painting: The Messenger

2009 – August 2013

I started this painting back in 2009…well, I say ‘started’ but really I just did the vaguest of backgrounds and then left the board to stand around gathering dust (and a shocking amount of cat fur…) for 4 years.

I’m really pleased to finally have finished it! Though it was a mission to paint because I don’t have an easel and so had to do most of it lying on the floor. Think it’s definitely time I rectify that. The Messenger (2013)

Oil & acrylic on masonite board, 1.2 x 0.8 m

Some detail and process pics after the jump.

West Coast daisies

21 & 22 August 2013

An annual harbinger of Spring, the carpets of flowers that decorate the West Coast (usually from late July/August onward, depending on the weather) are really special, beautiful and always worth visiting. I spent some time in Langebaan and Saldanha last week doing just that…

One Night in Cape Town 2013 at the Grand Arena

Thursday
8 August 2013

I’m so glad that once again those in Cape Town who weren’t heading to Oppikoppi were given the chance to see the festival’s international headliners on one night at Grand West casino, and this year those headliners were Manchester Orchestra, Yellowcard and the epic Deftones.

Illustration: Moths

ART

I love moths. I’ve wanted to do something with them for a while, so I stole a few hours last night to draw this. The ones featured are based on an Atlas, Chinese Luna (both from the fanciest moth family, the Saturniidae) and Garden Tiger, which sadly all live nowhere near where I do. I generally only ever see little dusty grey ones, so I included one like that in the picture too.

Kirstenbosch celebrates world biodiversity day & their 100th birthday

22 May
& 1 July 2013

I love Kirstenbosch, it’s a really beautiful place, but sadly I don’t visit that often…but free entrance is a great incentive – this is a combined post of my last 2 visits: World Biodiversity Day on May 22nd and the garden’s 100th birthday on July 1st.
