I don’t entirely understand how The Assembly’s Miller Music Series works (themed by international cities in some way…?) but so far their line-ups have been really cool; from VCK & Foto na Dans last month, to The Pretty Blue Guns & The Windy City last Saturday.
I’d had a rather off Saturday and was totally ready to sleep at 9:30pm yet somehow by 9:31 I’d decided to get changed make my way to The Assembly.
I arrived in time to catch the last 30 seconds of Beach Party, which surprised me a bit as I didn’t think they’d have started so early…can’t say I liked what I heard very much but everyone I spoke to who had seen them seemed to think they were cool so I’ll just have to catch them properly another time…
Up next was an acoustic set from Werner Olckers, in his own words, ‘formerly one fourth and now one third of Wrestlerish’. It wasn’t really my thing, but then I don’t have a lot of stamina when it comes to acoustic performances and am not overly familiar with anything Wrestlerish apart from current single Bodies of Water, which worked pleasantly enough at a bare bones level.
I was quite curious to see The Windy City and have been wanting to check them out for a while. They were quite a bit synthier and poppier than I was expecting (which is weird because my only prior exposure to them was their track Games, which pretty much represents their sound, so I dunno what I was expecting really) but cool. It was the rockier track near the end of their set that I particularly liked though.
I found it a little funny to be seeing Pretty Blue Guns 2 weekends in a row,but I enjoyed them last week and think I liked them even more the second time round. They also threw in a couple of cool covers, including a pretty bulked up (compared to the original) reworking of The Kills’ No Wow, for which they were joined by Stepdog‘s Jonathan Velthuysen on guitar.
