BEAST are an incredibly raw and energetic band, so I was surprised when last I saw them at how much I really loved their acoustic performance. They’re a band that understand that ‘acoustic’ means actually reworking the material for a quieter context and they really, really do it well.
As a thank you to backers of their new album and their family and friends, the band held a private acoustic launch of Bardo at the Cape Town Club last Saturday. The incredible venue perfectly matched their stunning performance.
I’d never heard of The Cape Town Club before last Saturday and was really blown away that such a venue could exist – the unassuming exterior and location (just opposite St. George’s Cathedral on Queen Victoria Street) hides an enormous and stately building that feels like it belongs on a rolling lawn somewhere in America…they even have a fake bookcase door that leads to the basement bar and party area.
It was a really unique choice of venue that added an extra bit of drama and sophistication to the evening…not that it needed it. The band were great – Inge Beckmann was spellbinding as always and the restraint of their acoustic performance just seemed to heighten the tension and intensity of their music.
I can’t wait to hear to the ‘fully loaded’ recorded version of the album.
