Rennes: Marché des Lices and the old town
The last day of our trip saw us in Rennes on a Saturday morning, which meant we could check out the market and explore a bit of the town before catching our train to the airport.
Of all the places we visited, Rennes didn’t make the best impression on me. Admittedly, when we arrived it was raining and we were tired and not really able to see much of the place, so I was glad of the opportunity to explore more the second time around.
We set off early for the market and enjoyed the very empty streets on our way there.
The famous row of crooked old houses were quite lovely, and were quite close to a big selection of flower sellers.
Also nearby was an area of decrepit old houses. Some were clearly damaged in fires and some were just neglected and abandoned-looking. The graffiti especially was quite sad to see.
Right around the corner was the Marché des Lices, which is apparently France’s second largest market. I can believe it, the place was huge and featured both outdoor and indoor vendors. Those outside were selling a huge selection of fruits and vegetables and all kinds of seafood, and those indoors a wide selection of amazing looking food products, ranging from bread to ham.
If we’d had more time we’d probably have bought more food, but we settled for a few huge slices of really good jambon and later used the last of our butter and bread to make amazingly rich sandwiches.
We saw a few of the famous landmarks (the opera and the Breton parliament buildings) but I was trying to find a cheap souvenir place (we came across several in many other towns) and had no luck. The only place that could’ve been promising was closed. So that was a bit frustrating, and we eventually gave up to head back to the hotel and packup.
My lasting image of Rennes was ‘the most unlucky car in the world’, which we saw on the way back to the hotel. We stopped and laughed while taking pictures and everyone else walking past also giggled.
The rest of the trip was a blur of transportation. Our train was comfortable and had us back at CDG just before 3pm, which gave us 7 hours to wait before boarding our plane back home.
