Formerly the Cape Town World Music Festival, the newly renamed Cape Town Nu World Festival took place at the CT city hall last weekend. The lineup featured an exciting mix of local and international artists from countries including Zimbabwe, Austria, Namibia and Turkey.
Stand-outs for me included Bateleur (back after a long absence), Tcheka & Derek Gripper, Native Young and Zuko Collective; Simphiwe Dana was also great and Fantasma felt a lot more cohesive than the last time I saw them; Kando Bongo Man and Mokoomba were great fun to watch with their choreographed dance moves; in spite of arriving over an hour late Riky Rick got the crowd moving and the small dance stage was always packed and pumping every time I checked it out.
All in all it was a really cool festival and I look forward to going again next year.
