It’s a shame more people weren’t at Mercury last Saturday (even the bar staff showed up 45 minutes late) because The Curious Incident put on a great show, as did Saintfearless who have yet to disappoint.
I wanted to like Jackal+Wolf – their sound was quite hard and heavy, which was cool, I just found their tracks all a bit samey and lyrically repetitive…
Though the absence of their guitarist was felt, Saintfearless were still great fun and proved that the size of the crowd has no bearing on the level of energy and passion they pump into their performances.
According to their facebook page, “The Curious Incident is a mixed-bag band of multinationals fighting modern rock conventions with their Leopard/Snake Rock” – and I’d say that sums them up pretty accurately. I felt like they took a while to get into their stride, but somewhere near the middle of their set, it was like someone lit a fire under singer Kyle Roberts and his sudden added energy kicked the band into high gear (and made him seem to me a bit like a lovechild of Fox Comet’s Rob Coutts and The Great Apes’ Yusif Sayigh – a deadly combo if ever there was one).
They have an interesting sound and were a lot of fun to watch, even throwing a couple of exotic percussion instruments into the mix every now and then.
