Woodstock Mafia, Fox Comet & My Flawless Ending at Carnival Court

Saturday 3 September 2011

It really wasn’t wise of me to subject my sickly body to another loud and late night, but what can I say, I’m a trooper…okay not really, but I am a big fan of Fox Comet & Woodstock Mafia and will make the effort to see them whenever they play. Such was the case on Saturday, when they played with My Flawless Ending at a charity gig at Carnival Court.

Last time I was at Carnival Court it was a crazy party, this time round things were a lot quieter. The event was in aid of a local children’s charity, though no-one was allowed to say who the charity was (something about the whole sex and drugs and rock n roll lifestyle not sitting too well with kids).

I didn’t have high hopes for the first act, My Flawless Ending, because of their emo name, emo hair and bare feet, so I was pleasantly surprised by their set. They mixed up a bunch of genres with a ridiculous amount of energy and were loads of fun to watch. They even recruited the chief headbanger in the front row to sing the last track with them (though that sounds more spontaneous than it was, I mean I’m sure he is a singer, and that they knew him…they must’ve – he was was barefoot too and I’m sure that was no co-incidence) which was pretty cool.

Up next were Fox Comet, who are fast becoming favourites of mine. No matter the size of the venue they’re in, it always feels like the walls are in danger of coming down from the enthusiasm and energy they put into their performances. This is mostly because of vocalist/saxophonist Rob Coutts’ apparent inability to stand still; he even managed to stage-dive off the 2 inch high ‘stage’ and bounce around the crowd a bit mid-song.

Super fun as always.

The room had emptied a bit by the time Woodstock Mafia started playing, but what the crowd lacked in numbers it made up for in devoted intensity and general hardcore-ness. The band didn’t disappoint and were as energetic and enjoyable as ever, concluding their set with a (virtually) full-on stage-dive which was very impressive given the height of the stage (and the size of the crowd).

They left the audience screaming for more and promising it at their EP launch on the 16th; I know I’ll be there.

Hey Laura, once again thank you for making it out on Saturday. Your photo skills are mad – you somehow make me lose 10 lbs with your camera.
