Dutch tall ships at the Waterfront

12 & 14 May
2013

Following pretty closely after last month’s Russian Sedov, two weeks ago the V&A Waterfront docks were graced by 3 more tall ships, this time Dutch – the Tecla, Europa and Oosterschelde. We checked them out on Mother’s Day when they were open to the public and then watched them depart for Durban the morning of the 14th.

Each of the ships was either over or approaching their 100th birthday – the Tecla was the smallest and the Oosterschelde the largest, and the one where people were allowed to explore below the deck.

We returned early on Tuesday morning along with a small crowd and watched the majestic ships unfurl their sales and take to the sea (with a very loud send off from the Cannon Association of South Africa). It was quite an amazing (and anachronistic) sight watching them leave.
