Rainy day at the market (April 2012)

Saturday 14 April 2012

I was going through my photos from the last 12 months to put together a post of some of the inbetweeners, when I came across these, taken in mid April. I don’t know why I never posted them, I definitely intended to…anyway here they are, I remember the day well…

Our morning started early and on Table Mountain.

Table Mountain: wintry view

The Milnerton Market never fails to deliver all kinds of interesting and unexpected sights and experiences. It was quiet that day, which I always prefer, and the weather was chilly; winter was right around the corner.

Many of the items on sale are personal, but the bunch of postcards we passed on one stand were probably the most personal items I’ve seen there to date. We skim-read a few, it was like reading a novel, getting lost in the good old days of someone else’s life. It was quite surreal, and quite sad.

Strange how something so small can show so much – a random postcard happens to describe an experience someone will never forget, from a formative time in their life, and via a medium that arguably has no functional place in our society anymore. But an email could never be an artifact – I hope letter and postcard writing don’t become extinct as we race ever-on in the name of progress.
