Before their show at Kirstenbosch that evening, I attended American folk band The Lumineers’ press conference with Tecla to get some shots of the band for Texx and The City. The band were very down to earth and all seemed like a sweet bunch of people.
After a tentative start (the band broke the ice by assuring everyone “don’t worry, you can’t ‘out-shy’ us”) the questions started flowing and the answers brought forth smiles, laughs , nods and furious note-taking.
I confess, during the quieter moments I fought hard to suppress the urge to tell percussionist Jeremiah Fraites that I loved him in Zombieland and True Detective…
(because, I mean, he must get that all the time, surely…)
Stand-out moments for me were cellist Neyla Pekarek confessing her love of crafts, saying she always brings tonnes of impractical stationery with her on tour so she can write letters from the road, and bassist Ben Wahamaki recalling his most memorable fan interaction: ”she came up to me and said ‘the band wouldn’t be the same without you!’ which was so amazing, because I’m a bassist, and no-one ever says that about the bassist.”
They seemed like really nice people – I hope they enjoyed their time here in SA!
