& 1 July 2013
I love Kirstenbosch, it’s a really beautiful place, but sadly I don’t visit that often…but free entrance is a great incentive – this is a combined post of my last 2 visits: World Biodiversity Day on May 22nd and the garden’s 100th birthday on July 1st.
The day before my birthday might have been iffy weather-wise, but it was also World Biodiversity Day at Kirstenbosch and so free entry! I hadn’t been there for a while so really enjoyed wandering around and seeing how many centenarian plants (marked with plaques) I could spot and was happy to learn some of my favourite trees (particularly the Ginkgo and Atlas Cedar) are over 100 years old.
I was also happy to see loads of Black Legged Orb Weavers in the gardens, perched in their beautiful golden webs.
Fast forward a bit to another winters’ day: the gardens celebrated their 100th birthday on July 1st and were once again open for free all day. I stopped by in the late afternoon for a short walk. It was cold but very enjoyable.
