Déjà-Vu; the first gig I attended last year was the Sublime Tribute show, so it’s amusing, and fitting I guess, that the event (back by insanely popular demand) be my inaugural gig of 2013.
I’ve never been a big fan of Sublime or overly familiar with their music, but you don’t have to be to appreciate how many of Cape Town’s musicians (and citizens) are – last year’s show was the craziest I have ever seen Mercury…this year the event played over Friday and Saturday (a first for the venue I think, to have the same show on 2 nights in a row) and tickets for Friday sold out well in advance.
100 tickets were available at the door from 8:30, and people were queuing from 8 – most of them would be turned away as the limited tickets were quickly snapped up.
Things kicked off a little late, but the beer flowed (and spilled…everywhere…) and the walls threatened to burst as what seemed like all of Cape Town gathered to dance and sing along with an ensemble cast including members of 7th Son, The Rudimentals, Taxi Violence, Captain Stu, Half Price, Peachy Keen, The Little Kings, Grassy Spark, The Bone Collectors, Juke Royal, LP Show, Woodstock Mafia and more…
As expected, things got messy.
Honestly speaking, I preferred last year’s show…still, the 2013 installment was insane, and a night that will be remembered for a good long while.
