Always exciting to check out international bands – last Saturday’s visitors were UK blues rockers Scoundrels, wrapping up their SA tour with their penultimate show at the Assembly, along with the ever-entertaining Mr. Cat & The Jackal and Bicycle Thief.
Bicycle Thief kicked things off. It was my first time hearing them and I thought they were cool, so I subsequently downloaded their Free EP, which is sadly neither here nor there, but I recommend it for title track Ammunition, which I really like.
Up next were Mr Cat & The Jackal, who were super energetic and theatrical as ever. Even though they weren’t headlining, I thought theirs was the stand-out performance of the night.
When I hear a cool song/see a cool music video and am not near a pen, I make a note of it on my phone for further investigation. The first name on one of my older cellular notes was ‘Scoundrels’ but, helpfully, without a song name…still, I’d obviously heard something of theirs that I thought was pretty cool, which boded well for their performance.
I confess, I wasn’t blown away by the band, but I did enjoy watching them. They were cool and had some amusing lyrics and anecdotes (like dedicating one song to biltong and claiming that they’d each eaten their weight in dried meat since arriving in SA). They also spoke a little Afrikaans, which was sweet.
