Lark and Mr Cat & The Jackal at Klein Libertas

Lark are back with a vengeance and put on a great show at Stellenbosch’s Klein Libertas Teater with Mr Cat & The Jackal last Wednesday/leap day.

I really enjoyed Mr Cat & The Jackal‘s album Sins and Siren Songs so was eager to see them live. The large assortment of weird and wonderful instruments on stage was immediately intriguing and their subsequent mixing and matching of said instruments during the performance was great to watch.

The band are really theatrical, both in their sound and live performance which makes them very entertaining live. Even in the slower numbers like Where’s my shoes they kept the drama alive with amusing facial expressions and melodramatic delivery. The audience also got involved during that song, singing along loudly and holding their shoes aloft – loads of fun.

Lark put on another great show with Inge Beckmann in a flowy silk dress and as mesmerising as ever. It was clear the room was packed with dedicated fans, delighted to see the band again as they sang along to old favourites and screamed pleadingly for set-closing third encore Tricksy.

At the end of their set, there was a dizzying stampede outside as the air inside was so heavy with smoke and heat it was almost suffocating – I’m sure it was that bad during the performance but no-one seemed to notice or care.
