Last year was the first annual Cape Town Electronic Music Festival, a really cool inner-city weekend event featuring both local and international electronic artists. This time the festival moved to the Grand Parade, a really great and truly central venue, and, even though I only attended one day this time around, I think that this year’s festival was even better than last year’s.
It’s been a while since I’ve been to a proper loud and sweaty gig – that, combined with what I’d been hearing about Kingdom had me really looking forward to their band launch at Mercury for a good while. And after the fact I can say the hype is well deserved, Kingdom put on a great show and Stoker and Feverstone were the perfect accompaniments.
This tiny little guy visited my windowsill marigold seedlings a little while back and had a little wash while I took some pics. I find it amazing how mantis eyes just follow you no matter which way their heads are facing…
Here’s a fun project I worked on at the end of last year: a custom animated invitation for a 21st birthday party. My client provided the idea, the script and voice-over as well as the photos of herself, her friends and family. I worked out the visual script, assigned costumes to the characters and brought it all to life through animation according to her specifications.
Back in September last year I took some shots for Arc Reactor’s debut album Postmodern Construct. Now that the album’s been put for a while, I can post the images: the band wanted to do something different with their portraits, something that would express their individual personalities and also tie in thematically with the album. We came up with this concept of a combination of double exposure portraiture and photomanipulation, expressing elements of each member’s personality through a visual metaphor.
