Music: 2015 in review

MUSIC

Another year has evaporated and it is now 2016, and my 9th last.fm anniversary.

Last.fm’s implemented a whole load of changes most of which I don’t really like but the improved graphs are interesting – looking back on mine I can see I didn’t listen to as much music as I usually do this year. I missed a lot of the big releases and will no doubt get into them belatedly over the next few months, but in the meantime here’s what I enjoyed listening to the most in 2014.

Zebra & Giraffe Slow Motion EP launch at Mercury

Sun 27 December 2015

The last gig I attended for 2015 (and weirdly my second Sunday night gig in a row) was Zebra & Giraffe’s Slow Motion EP launch at Mercury last week. I haven’t seen them in a while and really enjoyed the show, even if their new material lacks a lot of their signature darkness – clearly recording in California had a big influence on the mood and sound of the new stuff.

Still, they played a great show with a nice mix of new and old material and were supported by Wear Wolf and Yorke. Here are some shots from the night.

The Darkest Hour at Assembly

Sun 20 December 2015

Many an international metal act has graced our shores this year courtesy of Witchdoctor Productions, and the last of them for 2015 was Washington’s The Darkest Hour.

Originally scheduled to play Cape Town first, an incident at last month’s Finntroll gig prompted the promoters to change venues and dates. As a result the band played Durban and Joburg respectively so while we couldn’t boast hosting their first show on African soil we had the honour of witnessing their final one of the year and their 20th anniversary tour.

Rouge Review: A Comic Strip at Truth

Sat 5 December 2015

A while back I got to shoot the lovely ladies of the Rouge Review performing their burlesque show ‘A Comic Strip’ at the always cool Truth Coffee Roastery.

Interpretations of the night’s theme ranged from the comedic to the heroes and villains of comic books but were always incredibly sexy and entertaining. Here are some shots from the night.

Harley Davidson Tyger Valley held a Dia de los Meurtos-themed mini tattoo convention featuring live tattooing, piercing, facepaint and entertainment courtesy of The Ratrod Cats.  And of course loads of bikes.

Here are some shots from the morning.
