The last time I saw the Makabra Ensemble perform a live score to a silent horror film was in 2012 when they re-imagined Nosferatu. Watching them again last Friday, breathing new life into the 1926 classic Faust, made me sorry I’d missed so many of their previous performances – what they do is truly something special.
A highlight of the annual SA HorrorFest at the Labia Theatre, the orchestral performance coincided with the night market and halloween dressup competition. As usual some people went all out on terrifying costumes and were rewarded for their efforts with some great prizes; top honours went to Maleficent, Creepy Jester Guy and Pregnant Alien.
Musically combining industrial, cinematic and atmospheric elements and even, for one incredibly hilarious scene, comedic genius, the Makabra Ensemble reinvigorate old classics in the most arresting way. I really enjoyed every moment of the performance and definitely won’t wait another 3 years before seeing them again.
The Halloweekend may be over but the Horrorfest is still running for the rest of the week – check out their website and facebook page for more details.
