On the first weekend of November the Zandvlei nature reserve in Muizenberg once again played host to the CT International Kite Festival. Sunday was a beautiful summer day with a good wind: perfect kite-flying conditions for both the public and the professionals.
Now in it’s 19th year, Africa’s bigget kite festival once again featured kiters from all over South Africa as well as internationals from the USA, UK, Kenya and the Netherlands. Some of the kites on display included the huge Spanish Diablo (renamed ‘South African Sun’ in honour of the American owners’ 9th visit to the festival), a pair of beautiful white doves, the giant green frog from last year, Revolution team flying and stunt kites.
The public were treated to the impressive show kites as well as live music, dancing and singing. A great family event, there were designated play areas with loads of entertainment for kids – from what looked like mini airhockey to inflatable boards and dice – as well as a space where the public could fly kites. There were also kite-making workshops, a night-flying display on Saturday night (sadly I missed that but by all accounts it sounds awesome), jumping castles, food and drink stands, market stalls selling everything from handbags to indigenous plants and a heritage kite competition for home-made kites.
All profits from the festival go to Cape Mental Health, who this year celebrate their centenary.
