I had high expectations and wasn&#8217;t disappointed.<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Van-Coke-Kartel2_LMcC_3550.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/taxi-violence-the-plastics-double-video-launch-with-la-vi-at-zula\/\" target=\"_blank\">the last time I saw them<\/a> &#8211; again, they&#8217;re pleasant enough but just never leave a huge impression on me.<\/p>\n<p>They are however about to head to Malawi along with <a title=\"more on Bateleur\" href=\"\/blog\/tag\/bateleur\" target=\"_blank\">Bateleur<\/a> &amp; <a title=\"Holiday Murray album launch at The Assembly\" href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/holiday-murray-album-launch-at-the-assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\">Holiday Murray<\/a> to play at the Lake of Stars Festival which is pretty awesome and should not go uncongratulated.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style type=\"text\/css\">\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/we-are-beautiful-losers-at-a-word-of-art-woodstock\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bateleur<\/a>&#8216;s sometime violinist wasn&#8217;t there, but their set was still cool. Plus they had a new intro routine which involved most of them grabbing a drumstick or 2 and hitting the nearest drum\/amp &#8211; a nice (and pretty dramatic) way of starting off.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that really annoyed me though was the deafening volume of their set; the guitarist set up his amp and did a quick soundcheck while the DJ was playing &#8211; holy shitsticks. The sound just cut through everything and seemed impossibly louder than anything else that night had been. here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vancokekartel.co.za\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vir Almal<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0which I wasn&#8217;t overly impressed with initially (<a title=\"vir almaaaaal video\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/29032665\" target=\"_blank\">the video is just ridiculous too<\/a>) but which was transformed into something quite exciting when they played it live.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style
