A little bit of disappointment was inevitable, but while I&#8217;m sorry to have missed <a title=\"Desmond &amp; The Tutus, The Plastics &amp; She Man Lion at the Assembly\" href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/desmond-the-tutus-at-the-assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\">Desmond &amp; the Tutus<\/a> and <a title=\"Holiday Murray album launch at The Assembly\" href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/holiday-murray-album-launch-at-the-assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\">Holiday Murray<\/a> at The Assembly, I really enjoyed seeing <a title=\"Van Coke Kartel, Stonecollar &amp; Coal acoustic show at Mercury\" href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/van-coke-kartel-stonecollar-coal-acoustic-at-mercury\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coal<\/a> again and am glad to have caught Them Tornados before they take some time off from gigging.<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Coal2_LMcC_0570.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-3\" data-rl_title=\"Coal\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3847\" title=\"Coal\" src=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Coal2_LMcC_0570-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Coal\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Coal2_LMcC_0570-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Coal2_LMcC_0570-575x383.jpg 575w, http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Coal2_LMcC_0570.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <a  href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Them-Tornados2_LMcC_0795.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-3\" data-rl_title=\"Them Tornados\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3886\" title=\"Them Tornados\" src=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Them-Tornados2_LMcC_0795-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Them Tornados\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Them-Tornados2_LMcC_0795-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Them-Tornados2_LMcC_0795-575x383.jpg 575w, http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Them-Tornados2_LMcC_0795.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I really enjoyed\u00a0 <a title=\"Van Coke Kartel, Stonecollar &amp; Coal acoustic show at Mercury\" href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/van-coke-kartel-stonecollar-coal-acoustic-at-mercury\/\" target=\"_blank\">last month&#8217;s acoustic gig<\/a> by the lovely ladies (and gentleman) of Coal and was keen to see them again, this, coupled with my curiousity on how Zula would handle a normal gig following the chaos and intensity of their <a title=\"Zula\u2019s Grand Re-opening\" href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2011\/07\/zulas-grand-re-opening\/\" target=\"_blank\">re-opening party<\/a>, was why I chose their gig over all the other ones that seemed to have conspired to take place on the same night.<\/p>\n<p>I think it was because of all those aforementioned gigs, along with the fact that they were the opening act, that the crowd at Zula was pretty sparse (though it would take a lot of people to make their cavernous hall feel anywhere near to being full). It&#8217;s a real shame though because Coal&#8217;s music really is lovely.<\/p>\n<p>Venue-wise I was glad to see the dark corner of doom on the side of the stage had been &#8216;cordoned off&#8217; by piles of musical equipment and that the band area was restricted to the space between the pillars. I still found the lighting quite bad and the sound iffy, but was glad to see there were guys collecting the bottles and glasses this time round.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style Voom Voom to see Them Tornados I was keen&#8230;especially after watching Black Moscow for a while&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I like heavy music I just wasn&#8217;t really feeling the two or so songs of theirs I heard&#8230;granted they might&#8217;ve improved had I stayed to watch but when the mic and lights died at the same time halfway through their second song, it felt like time to
