{"id":32944,"date":"2026-01-02T22:16:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T20:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/?p=32944"},"modified":"2026-01-03T15:17:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T13:17:36","slug":"2025-music-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2026\/01\/2025-music-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"2025 &#8211; Music in review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"musicDate\">MUSIC<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s once again the start of a new year and the time to reflect on the last 12 months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I felt like I didn&#8217;t listen to that much music my&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.last.fm\/user\/marmaluke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last.fm<\/a>&nbsp;stats reveal that I did in fact listen to more than last year (an average of 24 tracks a day vs. 18 in 2024) which I&#8217;m pretty happy about about, as I tried to make a conscious effort to seek out and listen to more music last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In honour of my 19th anniversary on last.fm, here&#8217;s a look at what I enjoyed in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"575\" height=\"190\" src=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/top-albums-2025.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32950\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A L B U M S<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mixed bag last year. Overall I liked individual tracks more than full albums, that said there were some excellent albums released in &#8217;25. Topping the list are 3 artists I have known and enjoyed for years though there were a few new discoveries among my broader favourites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My top pick, <strong>Viagra Boys &#8211; viagr aboys<\/strong> stood out for me as the most consistent album of the year (and the most consistent from the band to date), with a bunch of standout tracks but also a great flow and vibe which made it highly repeatable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following in second and third place are two hip hop albums on somewhat opposite ends of the spectrum: <strong>Aesop Rock &#8211; Black Hole Superette<\/strong> and <strong>Clipping. &#8211; Dead Sky Channel<\/strong>. That said, I was still lucky to attend some great gigs throughout the year, including a bunch of interesting international acts in the first quarter. The year kicked off with the returning Calabash festival at the DHL Stadium (featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1111239764345716&amp;type=3\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1111239764345716&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robbie Williams, Goodluck, Matthew Mole and Lee Cole on day 1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1112055437597482&amp;type=3\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1112055437597482&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Day, The Offspring and Fokofpolisiekar<\/a> on day 2), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1149724807163878&amp;type=3\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1149724807163878&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cigarettes After Sex at Grandwest<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1164181162384909&amp;type=3\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1164181162384909&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Goo Goo Dolls at Kirstenbosch<\/a> (always a magical venue).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/calabash_IMG_8348.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32963\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Green Day at Calabash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Texx and the City reprised 2 successful event series in the dreary winter months: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1270695071733517&amp;type=3\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1270695071733517&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Band or Bust battle of the bands<\/a> at House of Machine and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1328617729274584&amp;type=3\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1328617729274584&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">After Dark at the Two Oceans Aquarium<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>District once again had a great lineup of shows throughout the year, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1156817156454643&amp;type=3\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.1156817156454643&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the triumphant return of Kidofdoom<\/a> and probably my favourite live discovery of the year, Lefokolodi, who put on a really memorable show at the end of May (<a href=\"https:\/\/texxandthecity.com\/2025\/06\/lefokolodi-shine-as-they-close-out-districts-may-line-up\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/texxandthecity.com\/2025\/06\/lefokolodi-shine-as-they-close-out-districts-may-line-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read my show review for TATC over here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br>M Y&nbsp; W O R K&nbsp; :&nbsp; A L B U M  A R T<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t complete any video work in 2025 but I did another 2 original paintings as album art for my dad&#8217;s band McCully\/Mackay and their single &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1eEThxyKWRrjBv7pvmhFYA?si=hiWS_8FPSQWfyC9uVpOc8Q\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1eEThxyKWRrjBv7pvmhFYA?si=hiWS_8FPSQWfyC9uVpOc8Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Where are your heroes now?<\/a>&#8216; and EP &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3hDlCcagtQ0d8va4MfMlqw?si=eUIaA_4xTg-JfRvxMqcpdg\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3hDlCcagtQ0d8va4MfMlqw?si=eUIaA_4xTg-JfRvxMqcpdg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Quest<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"575\" height=\"284\" src=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/mccullymackay-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32961\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E U R O V I S I O N&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"367\" src=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/jj.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32962\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Political tensions continued to affect Eurovision in 2025 (and it&#8217;ll be interesting to see what happens in 2026) but outside of that the show was entertaining as ever with some great entries. First place went to the arty, operatic number from <strong>Austria<\/strong>, <strong>Wasted Love<\/strong> by<strong> JJ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"JJ \u2013 Wasted Love (LIVE) | Austria \ud83c\udde6\ud83c\uddf9 | Grand Final | Winner of Eurovision 2025\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/onOex2WXjbA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuing the tradition of recent years, the people&#8217;s choice was very much the spiritual successor to 2024&#8217;s <strong>Baby Lasagna<\/strong> and 2023&#8217;s <strong>K\u00e4\u00e4rij\u00e4<\/strong>. <strong>Estonia<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Tommy Cash<\/strong> and his earworm <strong>Espresso Macchiato<\/strong> topped the public vote and the iconic performance was an instant classic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tommy Cash - Espresso Macchiato (LIVE) | Estonia \ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddea | Grand Final | Eurovision 2025\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9b9Z5HSCXOI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Shoutout to <strong>Sweden <\/strong>for sending the first Swedish language entry in yeeeears, and ironically, it was a Swedish dialect courtesy of 3 Finns. <strong>KAJ<\/strong> were charming, hilarious and such a breath of fresh air from a country notorious for sending safe, cookie-cutter entries. I thought <strong>Bara Bada Bastu<\/strong> deserved to finish way higher, though in hindsight the prechorus, which counts 1, 2, 3, 4 Sauna actually predicted their 5th place score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"KAJ - Bara Bada Bastu (LIVE) | Sweden \ud83c\uddf8\ud83c\uddea | Grand Final | Eurovision 2025\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WSh7U3m9KgA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I also really enjoyed <strong>Albania<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RNT1SmmxuIk\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RNT1SmmxuIk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shkodra Elektronike &#8211; Zjerm<\/a><\/strong>, Latvia&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RKw0OCgPV3s\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RKw0OCgPV3s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tautumeitas \u2013 Bur Man Laimi<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R2f2aZ6Fy58\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R2f2aZ6Fy58\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lithuania&#8217;s Katarsis \u2013 Tavo Akys<\/a><\/strong>, and the hilariously oversexed <strong>Finnish <\/strong>entry, <strong>Erika Vikman<\/strong> with <strong>Ich Komme<\/strong>.
