{"id":32905,"date":"2025-01-02T03:09:27","date_gmt":"2025-01-02T01:09:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/?p=32905"},"modified":"2025-01-02T18:15:19","modified_gmt":"2025-01-02T16:15:19","slug":"2024-music-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2025\/01\/2024-music-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"2024 &#8211; Music in review"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"musicDate\">MUSIC<\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s the start of a new year which means it&#8217;s time for my annual reflection on the music in my life.<\/p>\n<p>Today marks 18 years since I joined\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.last.fm\/user\/marmaluke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last.fm,<\/a>\u00a0a truly sizeable chunk of time. It&#8217;s really true what they say &#8211; time moves faster as you get older. The year went by in a blur and unfortunately a lot of what I listened to became similarly blurred. I always enjoy the graphs and data that last.fm collects, it&#8217;s helpful and interesting, especially when I need a reminder of what I was really listening to.<\/p>\n<p>I knew before checking the graphs that I did not listen to a lot of music in the last year, but I did find a lot to enjoy; here is a look at some of my favourite music from 2023.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-32908\" src=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/top-albums-2024-575x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/top-albums-2024.jpg 575w, http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/top-albums-2024-300x99.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>A L B U M S<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been struggling for a while to get properly back into music. A whole bunch of factors have contributed to it, but it still makes me sad that I&#8217;m just not listening to as much music now as I A. historically have and B. would like to.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, January is a big listening month for me as I go through the internet&#8217;s best-of lists and check out all the albums I missed the year before. It usually gets me all invigorated and excited to keep listening throughout the year&#8230;sadly it can also be hard for me to maintain the momentum. That&#8217;s what happened in &#8217;23 &#8211; my listening data forms a valley over the course of the year, steadily declining and only picking up as year-end panic started to set in.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to me that my top albums all came from the later months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Coming in first is\u00a0<em><strong>Romance<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>by\u00a0<strong>Fontaines D.C.\u00a0<\/strong>I loved\u00a0<em>Skinty Fia<\/em> back in 2022 and think as a cohesive album I actually like\u00a0<em>Romance\u00a0<\/em>more. From the first ominous tones of the opening\/title track all the way to the glittery pop singalong closer\u00a0<em>Favourite<\/em> it was highly repeatable and my top pick of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Putting aside the whole cultural and meme movement surrounding it,\u00a0<strong>Charli<\/strong><strong> XCX<\/strong><em>&#8216;s\u00a0<strong>Brat\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>was a solid pop album. Still there were some worthwhile acts\/songs including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UMq8ofCstMQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ireland&#8217;s Bambie Thug<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RSMMU2wX0Bk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Estonia&#8217;s 5MIINUST\u00a0x Puuluup<\/strong><\/a>, and of course Switzerland&#8217;s winning performance by Nemo:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nemo - The Code (LIVE) | Switzerland\ud83c\udde8\ud83c\udded| Grand Final | Eurovision 2024\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CO_qJf-nW0k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While Nemo was incredible and deserved the win, I&#8217;m far from the only one who was heartbroken for <strong>Baby Lasagna and Croatia.\u00a0<\/strong>His whole story and journey from bedroom artist to the Eurovision stage was really touching and <em><strong>Rim Tim Tagi Dim<\/strong><\/em> was a banger. It felt like a bit of a repeat of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lauramccullagh.com\/blog\/2024\/01\/2023-music-in-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last year with K\u00e4\u00e4rij\u00e4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Baby Lasagna - Rim Tim Tagi Dim (LIVE) | Croatia \ud83c\udded\ud83c\uddf7 | First Semi-Final | Eurovision 2024\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6LyjyuaQggs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A special place in my heart goes to <strong>Finland and Windows95man*<\/strong>. Everything about this is perfection and I truly hope Eurovision never loses joyous acts like these:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Windows95man - No Rules! They subsequently leaned into it and printed the blurred logo on the shirt. The blurred video appended the song name with &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8Wi7fhswoBA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rules applied version<\/a>&#8216;. Genius.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8211; \u2013 &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Truthfully the process of compiling this was getting me down a bit, but rewatching <em>No Rules<\/em> has unironically put me into a good, and even optimistic mood.
